hi everybody!

well, it's been a while...

it's 2am again. i've been tinkering with setting up the flock web browser in ubuntu. i haven't been using ubuntu lately. mainly what happened was that i wanted to use my gps and didn't want to bother with setting it up in ubuntu at the time. i took the quick and easy route, and swapped in my hard drive that has windows xp on it, and well...i fell to the dark side there for a little bit.

anyway, a few days ago i helped out a friend...or friend's dad (whom is also a friend)....or something like that. apparently his windows xp install went kaput after trying to install service pack 3. i think i would freak out if i had 160gb worth of files that suddenly weren't accessible. anyway, he purchased a 500gb external hard drive, so the plan was to backup everything and then wipe out the internal drive with a fresh install. easy, eh? wrong. long story short, 6 hours later we finally got everything backed up thanks to a linux distribution called recovery is possible (r.i.p) . I originally attempted to use knoppix  however ran into the problem of writing to an ntfs formatted drive. luckily with rip i was able to force it. woohoo!

so anyway, helping out reminded me that i really liked the new ubuntu, and because of that gps incident i hadn't done anything with it in a few weeks. today i finally decided to swap out the drive for the one with ubuntu installed. i like it! i also found out that if i hold down the alt key, i can make a window transparent using the scroll on the mouse. i don't know, but that is neat.

so now flock is mostly setup. i look forward to getting everything setup on this system. here is something along the lines of what i hope to accomplish.  the video is a little bit outdated, but yeah...wish me luck :)

so, i leave you with a picture from a visit to a museum in austin the other day. all these pennies were from the year 2005. i believe it was $6000? well, if you're curious leave a comment and i will look it up and reply with more details.

Austin, TX

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop this weekend. There is notable improvement from the old version; many more things are working. I am not used to image editing on it yet, but here is a panoramic stitch of Austin. It's not as good as it should be, so i just might redo it later.

google chrome

This is my first ever (and probably last ever) post using Google's new web browser: Chrome.

I've only had it installed for a few minutes, and so far I like it better than internet explorer. I guess that's not really saying much. Google tends to make things i find useful. Google tends to make things that win me over quickly. Google also scares me.

At any rate, my main complaint is that I am now seeing ads. In Firefox, there is a plugin known as AdBlock Plus which really makes browsing a whole lot different. I've grown accustomed to that different. Also, my mouse scroll isn't working properly. I can scroll down, but have to use the keyboard to scroll up a page.

On the other hand, it does have some neat things. It allows you to resize certain text boxes. Apparently each tab is it's own process? that's cool except they are all chrome.exe, so good luck on figuring out which one to kill if that is ever the case. bleh. anyway, it definitely feels fast and makes good use of the screen. It has a lot of potential. I may have to reinstall it someday, but for now, i'll stick to firefox 3.

catch some z's

i overslept the other day. people were shocked. they thought i'd gotten my satellite all setup and had stayed up watching porn. i didn't. it's just that every so often one needs to sleep, and while saturday is my preferred day to sleep in, my body couldn't wait. maybe squeezing in an extra day in overtime for the past few weeks has something to do with it? nobody knows; it's not like they're looking out... i woke up and was very late for work.

my birthday is on its way. something tells me a semi-planned day off will work better for me. i don't really do birthday stuff, but i'm excited about checking out acl. maybe i'll wear my "jesus shirt" aka "hippie shirt". sorry, those are long and uninteresting stories of people giving my shirt a nickname.

i've been reading this book "snuff". tonight i finished chapter 20. seems to be a short read, and i seem to be taking my time with it.  come to think of it, i think my friend that sent it said the same thing.  i don't know if i can recommend it just yet; i should finish it first.

we've been getting a lot of rain, which has turned into a poor excuse to not ride my bicycle to work. it looks like it will take me longer to "pay off" the repairs. oh well, i'll get there. if i can ever wake up and not make excuses or justify going back to sleep...
