breaking news?

i just received some junk mail that says fidel castro has died the 29th of february. for the moment it is not on any of the usual news sites. i am stuck wondering if it is true...and if it is not, what would be the purpose of such junk mail?

today has been an interesting day as well as a boring one. i wonder if i'll remember after some time...

The best invention ever...

this doesn't really do anything to the sound as far as hearing better.

27 February 2008

greetings from the web.

today i received several invitations, i received an automated email from oprah's book club...something or other about a new world. well i decided to skip clicking the links in the email and ask my friend corita who happened to be on msn messenger at the time. in the end i ended up signing up for this book club and for some sort of class that starts march 3rd. i have the feeling that i'm going to be just like in college...without books until the 2nd or 3rd class.jajajaja.

the other invitation i got was for some beta website called verveearth. basically the site links to your blog and sort of puts you on a google earth map. so its umm, the location of the blog. there are a couple of things that bother me. first off, its an automated message that doesn't sound very automated but got caught by the spam filter. second (and maybe more importantly), the message was sent to an email not related to the only blog i use....this one. the message only said my blog from texas caught their attention.

the only thing that i can think is that i posted those clips and added the location info on youtube. hmm, ok i think i just figured out the connection on who sold me out. anyway, i sort of like the idea. it would be nice to find some other bloggers in my area, and peruse away. i can also see it becoming scary and makes me wonder if i should be a little more cautious with what i write.

while i like the idea of reading from different parts of the world, i think it would take something away. maybe its something like the indiana jones argument. i recently saw the preview for the indiana jones, and although i still want to see it, i was a little disappointed that it looks like it will have a lot of cgi. i think the trilogy did just fine with the effects capabilities of the era, and i would much rather the new one stick to that style. (maybe excluding some of those death scenes that look funny),

so, i think i'm going to explore that site a little more and maybe sign up and set my location from some public wifi spot that is not so close to where i live.

transitioning to sponsors

san antonio spurs

hemisphere arena  -> at&t center (formerly sbc center)

new york mets

shea stadium -> citi field

toyota center...

american airlines center...

FedEx Forum...

pepsi center...

staples center...

i'm really annoyed by stadiums or arenas with corporation names attached to them. i hope this trend goes away soon.  it sure doesn't seem like it. today i read an article about the new citifield logo. its sort of neat but it sounds like a lot of crap. i guess i'll have more of a reason to be a yankee fan because apparently their new stadium is called new yankee stadium. i'm glad it wasn't the mickey d's arena...

sunset station parts 1 and 2

a few hours ago i went to sunset station (a local venue close to the alamodome) to see bill clinton speak a little after the barack/hillary debate in the awesome city of austin,tx. the entire clip is about 12 minutes long, and youtube only allows 10 minutes max. so i had to split the files and aside from that had to leave a tiny blip of the end in part 1. my apologies for the poor quality, although the audio stream ain't totally crap.

like riding a bike?

i'm happy. i've successfully fixed my sister's laptop, and it appears to be back to normal.

a few weeks ago the processor fan failed, which made the laptop turn off and display the error "fan error" (or something similar) when trying to boot.

it looks like this feature saved the laptop. in this first pic you can see the processor. if you look above and to the left of the yellow exclamation, you see a green square with another darker square inside. to the left of the inside square is a slightly darker spot. i think this was damage from the short time before the fan failure detection.

in this model, the fan is inseperable from the heatsink and so its really annoying because fans are generally cheap and they're making you buy more than just the fan.

i found the fan online for around $45 with free shipping and no taxes. the only other thing i needed was  the thermal compound which is a sort of protective goop that goes between the heatsink and the processor. i found it for $3 at a local shop, and actually had quite a bit left over. in the second pic you can see the heatsink after replacement.

in other news, i've started my 2007 tax return, although i didnt get very far. i guess i was really lucky in that during my time unemployed i survived officially with around 500 bucks doing non-tech tech work. unofficially i sold some old computers, my ps3, and i don't remember what else...oh, and my brother saved me by paying me back for a camera i'd left with him in april. anyway, about this other news...

i'm super excited. as of a few minutes ago, my friend and i are going to a debate viewing party this thursday. former president clinton is supposed to be there (at the bar, according to my friend). it would have been nice to see the clinton-obama debate in person, but it just makes more sense to stay in san antonio. also, its pretty impossible as only 100 tickets were made available to the public, and i missed the window to enter into the drawing. for the moment i say i'm undecided, but i think i'm leaning towards obama. more on that some other time.

it can't snow if its 80 degrees out

there's a very tiny light at the end of this tunnel i'm in. i should keep plowing ahead until it becomes more obvious, or am i supposed to move away from the light? hmm.

this past sunday i finished paying off one of my credit cards. its a great feeling, but only a small victory when it comes to my debt. my raise kicked in on december 31st (it was supposed to be jan 1 but in order to avoid headaches they started it that monday) and i decided to apply almost all of it towards my debts. my old pay was already a raise from my old job, so i figure its the best approach since i'm not used to making more money yet. so far i'm on track, although i should probably do my taxes this weekend to see if i need to save a little for uncle sam. almost every year i end up owing the government more taxes than what is taken out of my checks. i think my best refund to date has been about 80 bucks, and that year i used a tax service so i ended up with about 20 bucks.

i feel a little bit stuck. my job is making me a little blah, mainly because i'm sitting in a cubicle by the restroom most of the day. my thoughts are fairly meaningless. they prefer to listen to people who know less but talk better. for the moment it makes most sense to stay put. its close to home, so my gas bill is down. its a nice paycheck, and so i can pay down some debts sooner than later. i need to figure out some way to make myself shine again...to make it obvious that i'm not cubicle material.

i guess i'm still not entirely over the whole getting fired thing. doing just enough not to get fired is not a motivation i'm used to. corporate america is not something i'm used to. its where i'm at though.

i'm a slave, and all i can do for the moment is try putting a little sand in the gears. it won't always be like this.

election coverage 2008

i don't know why, but i find both of these clips amusing. is it cheese? i dunno. seems cheesy to me. i tried finding a mccain spot that was in spanish, but there were none.

11 February 2008

hello again.

tonight was both eventful and boring. i spent a lot of it talking about soulmates with a good friend of mine. i feel like i've only met one once in my life, and they're gone now so it really doesn't leave me much to write about. i'm not totally saddened by this, but i guess its kind of an interesting or not-so-interesting fact. bleh.

tonight has been more about drinking than it has about thought, so i'll just stop while i'm behind.
