I think I need to build an arc...badumpbump

I just had one of those dreams where you recognize a lot of people in a semi-familiar place. It'd been some time since I'd had one of these dreams, but I always find it interesting to see who interacts. I had a friend that used to tell me he could control his dreams. I'm not like that. However, with this sort of dream I think I do realize (within the dream) that I'm dreaming.

Anyway, these are pleasant dreams for the most part. For at least a little while, you see a lot of people you forgot about. It's not that you meant to forget about them, it's just you never see them again and all the other things you DO see make them the last thing on your mind. For me, this doesn't last very long once I wake up. I tend to start wondering about one or two people, what happened with them, possible ways of getting in touch with them, and if they'd even want to get in touch.

Oddly enough, today the person I thought about wasn't in the dream. Instead it was someone I sat with in class my 2nd semester at UTSA. They don't really look or act the same, but in the dream it was sort of a mesh.

This people thoughts only last for a few minutes after waking up. Today it was interrupted by the sound of the neighbor's dog howling and wailing. Oddly enough it reminded me of my forgotten childhood German shepards, Ringo and Laika. They used to howl at fire trucks, or when the city would test an emergency siren. For some reason I went to my room to look out No doubt I was still asleep, because there is a big fence and I can't see into my neighbor's yard. I did notice that our yard is flooded a little, and that it continues to rain. Although I love the rain, it's a little worrisome because for years this area had been in drought.

And so was born the following thought...

I need to build an ark. I need to build an arc. hmm.

You see, its a thought that has to do with my (partial) initials. Even though it's not the gringo way, I use 4 initials. At any rate, it seemed a curious thought after having a dream about many people who minimally affected your life. Maybe it wasn't so minimal when you add them all up? Quien sabe.

here goes nothing

Well sorry about the bad formatting of the article below, but oh well. I saw the following story yesterday on msn, and I remembered it today as I submitted a urine sample for a pre-employment drug test. Actually I felt like quite the criminal today. I was also fingerprinted, and the guy forced me to give an address that wasn't my p.o. box. where I receive all my mail. I should have given him my ancient address.

i found a job for the next few months, but I think it may depend on the results of my drug test. Now normally I wouldn't worry about it, but in the days following getting fired I did smoke out for about a day. I haven't had any since then, but according to the all-knowing internet, there is a possibility that it will show up. If it does show up and I don't end up getting hired, i'm going to be a little pissed. why? i could have cheated the system, but i'm going for honesty here. i've passed up smoking several times in the past month and a half. i could have smoked and then done some treatment to get it out of my system. i chose not to smoke any more (at least until my situation is different). i mean, it's not good for you anyway, right?

i dunno. i don't see anything wrong with marijuana. i mean, other than the possibility of cancer (like with tobacco), i don't understand the big deal. it doesn't help that the ministry of opinion manipulation (or whatever their official name is) comes out with stupid commercials to convince me not to smoke. in all the times i've smoked....i've never seen a dog tell me they are disappointed in me for smoking. i don't think my cat was ever actually disappointed either. i think these drug experts have their drugs mixed up. people who are disappointed seem to be the people who fall for that sort of rubbish.

while i'm here admitting smoking marijuana, i'd like to admit that i'm a much more cautious driver when i've smoked. i drive slower too.

anyway, i've always thought its a matter of self-control. the saying goes that anything excess is no good...and that sort of describes my smoking mentality. but eh...

i haven't smoked cigarrettes in the past month and a half.  i'm not even drinking much alcohol either. i consider those much more dangerous drugs, and yet it would make no difference on getting hired. heh. anyway, about this article...i find it a little amusing that they write it is a "problem". i mean, if the article had said most of the usage was crystal meth or heroin or something...then it would not be amusing. marijuana a problem? gimme a break. go stop a war!

in case you're wondering, i don't use anything else. i'm fine with being sober. i'm fine with being buzzed. i don't mind being buzzed. why bother with the rest? as george carlin would say, "i ain't tryin' to double my money..."

1 in 12 Full-Time Workers in U.S. Admit Using Drugs in Past Month

* E-MAIL STORY * PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION

WASHINGTON — One in 12 full-time workers in the United States acknowledges having used illegal drugs in the past month, the government reports. Most of those who report using illicit drugs are employed full-time, with the highest rates among restaurant workers, 17.4 percent, and construction workers, 15.1 percent, according to a federal study being released Monday. About 4 percent of teachers and social service workers reported using illegal drugs in the past month, which was among the lowest rates.Federal officials said the newest survey is a snapshot and was not designed to show whether illicit drug usage in the workplace is a growing problem or a lessening one. The current usage rate is 8.2 percent. Two previous government surveys reflected a usage rate of 7.6 percent in 1994 and 7.7 percent in 1997, but those studies involved a much smaller sample of interviews. The latest study comes from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, an agency within the Health and Human Services Department. The data is drawn from the agency's annual surveys in 2002, 2003 and 2004 of the civilian, non-institutionalized population. Each survey included interviews with more than 40,000 people, who were each paid $30 to participate.

(Story continues below)Advertise HereAdvertisements

Joe Gfroerer, an agency official, said most of the illicit drug use involved marijuana.Anne Skinstad, a researcher and clinical psychologist, called the survey's results "very worrisome" because there are fewer treatment programs than there used to be to assist employees and employers with a dependence on drugs. However, testing programs for drug use are fairly prevalent, with 48.8 percent of full-time workers telling the government that their employers conducted testing for drug use."I used to train supervisors to detect chronic use and intervene as early as possible, and that is a very good, constructive way rather than firing people," said Skinstad, an associate professor and director of the Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center at the University of Iowa. "Some employers want drug testing. I'm not sure that's the way I would like to go. What I think I would like to focus on is employee performance."The study also showed that the prevalence of illegal drug use reported by full-time workers in the past month was highest among younger workers.Nineteen percent of workers age 18 to 25 said they used illegal drugs during the past month, compared with 10.3 percent among those age 26 to 34; 7 percent among those age 35 to 49; and 2.6 percent among those age 50 to 64.Men accounted for about two-thirds of the workers — 6.4 million — who reported using illegal drugs in the past month, the government said. Men were also more likely than women to report illegal drug use in the past month — 9.7 percent for men, versus 6.2 percent for women. The study also looked at alcohol use by workers. About 10.1 million full-time workers, or 8.8 percent, reported heavy alcohol use. Heavy alcohol use was defined as drinking five or more drinks on one occasion at least five times in the past 30 days.

the sun is rising.

roaches have sex?!

Some (or 1) of you may remember a recent battle between a spider and myself. I woke up in the middle of the night and as my barefoot self went to go turn off the light, my foot came about an inch away from stepping on a big spider.

I've sprayed and bombed since then, but tonight that same feeling came back to me. I went to the kitchen for a glass of a tasty beverage, and there on the microwave was either a) roaches having sex or b) a strange mutation caused by all these damn chemicals. Basically, if you think of two big roaches joined by the behind in the fashion of catdog, that's what I saw.

Now obviously this creeped the hell out of me. I always thought roaches just magically popped out of nowhere. Either way, I was faced with a choice. Smash the bastards with a shoe, or go grab the ant/roach spray I've been keeping in my bathroom. Seeing as how I still haven't learned my lesson and I'm still walking around barefoot, I opted for the roach spray.

I grabbed the spray, came back (surprised that the roaches were still in the same exact spot), and sprayed away. Now here's a strange thing. When spraying pesticides, I've noticed there is always a delay from the time you start spraying until whatever you're spraying on realizes its getting sprayed. I usually take it as my cue to stop spraying. So I'm spraying this roach/roaches for about 3 seconds (which seems like a long time), and then they start heading to the back of the microwave. After this time I could hear them trying to move around or something....very creepy. Shortly after they appeared at the edge of the countertop (behind the microwave). They dangled for a minute, fell to the floor, and moved to the back of the fridge.

Anyway, the whole time they were joined in catdog fashion, so it seemed very strange. Normally a roach will just take off very quickly and you'll never see it again unless you really make an effort. Anyway, I'm sure the poison will get to them. Even if what I sprayed doesn't do it, the pesticide that I sprayed a few weeks ago is usually effective when the bugs are on the floor.

In other news, I'm kinda happy. The PS3 had a price drop about 2 days after I sold mine! This means that if I had waited any longer on sellng it I probably would have gotten even less. This also means that if I decide to buy one again once I'm back on my feet...that I can get a new one for about the same price that I sold it.

Other reasons to be happy? I was one of the first to see the new Harry Potter movie yesterday in IMAX 3d ...and in good company. :o) My friend Mike scored some tickets and we camped out in line for a couple of hours. I got a free poster too!

I still have no regular job yet, but I have little temp jobs to do until the end of the month. In the meantime there is ebay and craigslist. I love craigslist. Here is a link to the san antonio craigslist. Maybe there is one in your area?

vera...vera...what has become of you?

prozac nation

the ps3 ended up selling for about 70 bucks less than yesterday, but at least the guy payed right away. anywho, now i have a reason to wake up early. who knows, maybe i'll get back into a normal cycle. probably not.

i started looking around and figured i'd check out this movie "prozac nation". i thought it was going to be some sort of documentary. anyway, it's playing in the background now... i'm also just kinda doing a test to see how long the battery lasts on my laptop.

i got offered a kitty. i feel i should take it in, but i won't. i feel i should help find it a home, but i probably won't either. i did set a cat collage as my background though. i couldn't find it again, but i did find http://catsinsinks.com/

i guess i can swim a little. hopefully i can keep it up. it's been raining a lot lately.

grrrr!

i had legitimate bids for my ps3 on ebay, somewhere in the range of $570. suddenly some jerks bid $1500, and then $3000. i wouldn't mind, but its just a scam. they want me to ship off the ps3 to nigeria. anyway, the only good thing is that ebay isn't going to charge me the fees on the $3000. the bad news is that now I have to start all over again. this time i set it as a 1 day auction. hopefully i'll get some nice bids again.

in the meantime i'm a little stressed. stupid scammers.

more than meets the eye

its been a movie-tastic couple of days. on saturday, my friend zach paid for the ticket to see "live free or die hard". on sunday/monday, i watched "falling down" with michael douglas. today we saw "transformers" at the westlakes alamo draft house.

sadly, saturday was the last day for the original alamo drafthouse in downtown austin. it was my favourite out of all the alamo draft houses. i guess i'll do some explaining, just in case. the alamo draft house is a movie theater that adds food and drink to the experience. honestly the only 2 food things  i've ever tried have been a pizza and a cheeseburger, but the menu has all sorts of goodies on there. in the beverage area, they have lots of beers, wines, and other goodies like the root beer float or their version of the $5 milkshake (from pulp fiction).

its a themed sort of place, so for example...when "TMNT" came out earlier this year, they showed "teenage mutant ninja turtles" (the 1990 movie) the night before it came out. they had the pizzas on special. they also had the turtle van parked in front of the theater. oh, and they had tmnt pez dispensers! i got donatello. instead of showing advertisements for coca cola while you wait for the movie to come on, we got to see old ninja turtles cartoons, and some other cool stuff. this is typical of the drafthouse experience.

anyway, the original theater was my favourite. as you walked in you immediately went up some stairs, and as you got to the top you could see a giant poster of john wayne's 1960 film "the alamo". somehow everything always seemed kicked up a knotch from the other theaters. oh well. i took some sleeping aids and they feel like they're kicking in. i better shutdown.
